Ortho Evra > Ortho Evra Patch Side Effects DescriptionThe Ortho Evra patch, first approved by the FDA in November of 2001, is a contraceptive (birth control) skin patch used to prevent pregnancy. It is called a combination hormonal contraceptive because it contains two hormones, estrogen and progestin. It does not protect against HIV infection (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases. On November 10, 2005 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added a warning to the labeling of the Ortho Evra transdermal contraceptive. The addition of this new warning is a result of the FDA's review of studies directly comparing the levels of estrogen in users of the Ortho Evra patch with those using a typical (35 microgram) birth control pill. The analysis showed that women who use the weekly Ortho Evra patch may be exposed to 60% more estrogen than those using a typical birth control pill containing 35 micrograms of estrogen. Higher levels of estrogen may put some women at increased risk for getting blood clots and other dangerous Ortho Evra side effects. In general, a woman may be at higher risk for complications if she takes higher doses of estrogen. Since Ortho Evra provides a higher dose of insulin compared to birth control pills, it is reasonably assumed the Ortho Evra patch poses a greater health risk. Independent studies, not sanctioned by the FDA, have shown 3 out of every 200,000 users of the Ortho Evra patch die from related Ortho Evra side effects compared to 1 out of every 200,000 pill users. Women should discuss with their health care professional whether the Ortho Evra patch is a good method of contraception for them. There is strong evidence that cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular ortho evra side effects, especially if you are over 35. All women, and especially those who use the Ortho Evra patch, are strongly advised not to smoke. Some women should not use the Ortho Evra patch, including women who have blood clots, certain cancers, a history of heart attack or stroke, as well as those who are or may be pregnant. Women who have ever had migraine headaches with an aura should not use the Ortho Evra patch. Ortha Evra Patch Side Effects can be fatal.
